Based on the 2006 Naomi Alderman novel of the same name, Disobedience tells the story of a woman named Ronit (Rachel Weisz) who is ostracized from her strict Jewish Orthodox family and community. She returns for her father’s funeral and catches back up with two old friends, Dovid (Alessandra Nivola) and Esti (Rachel McAdams), who are now married to one another. Drama unfolds as it becomes clear that there’s a spark between two of them that would not be approved by the culture. Once their secret romance is detected, the two become entangled in a tall tale of forbidden love. Weisz also serves as producer of Disobedience, which has been praised by critics for being “thought-provoking,” “beautifully acted” and “emotionally nuanced.”

Julia Roberts and romance movies (or just about any genre, really) typically spell cinematic gold. That’s the case with this romantic flick that sees Roberts play famous actress Anna who falls for a London bookstore owner, William (Hugh Grant). They come from very different worlds, but can a romance blossom and survive between them despite their very different lifestyles and with Anna constantly under scrutiny by fans and paparazzi? This is a story about the difficulties of maintaining love while in the public eye, especially when one-half of the relationship is an average Joe and the other is a huge star. Notting Hill has elements of fairy tale and fun, propped up by its top-notch lead cast. Note that Notting Hill is not available to stream for those with Netflix Basic with Ads.

Predictable and silly, it’s the pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson that really makes this romantic movie, technically a rom-com, shine. Arrogant ad executive Benjamin (McConaughey) makes a bet that he can convince any random woman to fall madly in love with him. But he meets his match in Andie (Hudson), a magazine writer who is coincidentally (and unbeknownst to him) trying to purposely meet a guy and have him break up with her as research for an article.

Their alternative intentions soon collide. And despite her best efforts, Andie can’t seem to drive Ben away. While Ben finds Andie increasingly irritating, he is determined to stick around to win his bet. Of course, the duo eventually realize they have actual feelings for one another, but it’s the ride in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days up to that predictable point that’s thoroughly entertaining. It proves, in the most ridiculous way possible, that true love really can conquer all.

No, it’s not your traditional romance movie. But considering Clueless is loosely based on the Jane Austen romance novel Emma, you know there are romantic undertones that push the plot in a certain direction. Alicia Silverstone beautifully plays the popular, wealthy, spoiled, and shallow high school student Cher, who, along with her best friend, take on the shy, frumpy new girl as a makeover project. But as Cher does her best to help the young girl come out of her shell, she makes some serious realizations about herself as well and who the right guy might be for her. This movie is leaving Netflix on November 30, so watch now before you miss out.

Reuniting the iconic Speed duo of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, The Lake House takes a more subdued, romantic angle in this fantasy romance about two people who communicate with one another through letters in a mailbox at a lake house, even though they lived there at different points in time. While architect Alex (Reeves) resided there in 2004, doctor Kate (Bullock) moved in two years later in 2006, but they are somehow brought together through the magic of space and time. This sappy and sweet movie was a box office success, although it only received mixed reviews by critics. But the melodrama and charm, combined with the performances of the leads, easily make you forget about any plot inconsistencies.

In 1946, author Juliet Ashton (Lily James) journeys to Guernsey to learn more about the society and its missing co-founder, Elizabeth McKenna (Jessica Brown Findlay). Along the way, Juliet develops feelings for a Guernsey resident, Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman), even though her boyfriend, Mark (Glen Powell), has already asked her to marry him. Marriage Story was one of four Netflix original films to be nominated for the 2020 Golden Globes and is yet another thought-provoking, deeply moving offering about real life from celebrated director Noah Baumbach. Baumbach, who has built his reputation on down-to-earth films about relatable characters like The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha, and another Netflix original, The Meyerowitz Stories, delivers perhaps his most profound work yet in Marriage Story. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a couple who genuinely love one another yet can’t make their marriage work, Marriage Story is one of the most honest, complex analyses of love and marriage you’ll ever see. “Marriage is hard” is the platitude we always hear but this film takes that saying to its absolute logical and philosophical extent.
